I bought a .308 Howa a few weeks ago and it shoots worse than any rifle I have owned. I already have one Howa .308 that shoots fine. So I'm thinking of re barrelling this one in 7-08. Rich was shooting really well with one at the RRC yesterday and I'm hoping he'll put his load data on here but if anyone else has some please share it.

162gr amax, 39gr vit 150 ,fed 210 primers, hps-tr .308 brass necked down and neck turned, 72.8mm oal (mag length in an AICS mag). Giving me 2550 fps out of 22" barrel.
Will post start and max loads for the above later when I've had chance to look.
Got some vit550 to try. Hoping to get it to 2700fps ish.

Typo, should have been 20". It was going to be 22, but then the cutter came loose when cutting the muzzle thread and it wasn't perfect so it was cut off and re-done. It's actually 20.75".

How much did you take off the necks when you turned them. I've just FL sized mine and they were difficult to do so sure they need doing.

Can't remember off the top my head. The finished neck thickness was around 14 thou. Depends on how big your neck is. You need about 5 thou clearance for a field use gun. A tight neck is usually between 3 and 1 thou.

Thanks Rich. The loaded case size is .316 the same as the chamber so I'll take 004 off Ta

Re loaded 5 cases after neck sizing. Changed powder to H4350 43.5gr = 2578fps, 45gr = 2656fps. I've gained 100 fps and the cases are a lot cleaner after being shot

Useful to know. Got some loaded with reloader 17 to try this week. Tried the vit550 and it made no difference at all. Will let you know how I get on.

Finally ladder tested the reloader 17: Did 2 ladders at 300 yds and overlaid them here: Wind was a bit gusty up at dingle when I did it but still not a bad ladder test. A B and C all went into 2.5" and I'm fairly sure I pulled the high C. Average velocities were as follows: A 2518 41.5gr B 2576 42gr C 2610 42.5gr D 2650 43gr E 2673 43.5gr F 2717 44gr G 2732 44.5gr H 2755 45gr I 2781 45.5gr J 2816!! 46gr No pressure signs at max so could go higher too. Only problem was after E things really went erratic. Still, better groups than I was getting with the 150. Might repeat it again to see if I get the same results but at least I know 2800fps is possible now with the 20" barrel. Might keep going up with the powder too as there were absolutely no pressure signs. See what velocity I can get. Hopefully their might be another node higher up. Still a little puzzled though as to why the higher velocities went off to the left. Have had the rifle apart to check it wasn't a bedding thing. Also why I want to repeat it, as both ladders did the same which would suggest it is systematic.

2800 with 162 a max that would be nice. Keep up the good work. I'll load the 4350 up a bit more as they still have no signs of pressure
