Guys
I have a reloading student asking for powder / load recommendations for the above......usual caveats apply.
I only shoot 155 Scenars wth N140 in mine so looked up manuals...Sierra and Viht.....looks like N540 or N550 good for 175g bullets.
Varget would no doubt work well but as Viht powders are generally easiest to get I have said N550 looks potentially best BUT does anyone on here actually use Viht powders with the 175s?

I have used 160 with a 178 A-Max, can't remember the load though. Have you looked at their latest guide: www.vihtavuori.com/upload/guide-and-brochure/vihtavuorireloadingguideed13_2014engwww.pdf175 HPBT Sierra Min Vel Max Vel N140 35.3 2177 41.4 2501 N540 37.7 2253 43.1 2586 N150 36.8 2236 43.5 2573 N550 39.6 2290 45.8 2631 In my experience, it's best to stick with the 100 series. The 500 series can be temperamental and doesn't give that much of a velocity boost. The added benefit of the 100 series is that if you reload a lot then you can buy the 3.5kg tubs which brings the cost down.

I used N140 with SMK175gr I was getting 2559fps from a 20" barrel, not really a long distance rifle but did get out to 1000 yards with 42moa. He's much better off shooting 155.5s

The old 175 smk has a poor BC compared to more recent bullets with long boat tail but it transonics well so may be worth sticking with for 1000 and maybe more.

He seems determined to shoot 'heavies'.....think I will tell him to decide between N150 or N550.
