I will use my 308 up to 600-800 yards and a 260 or 6mm SLR or 338LM past that BUT I have a guy that I taught to reload asking if I have data for the 308 at 1000yds.
I see people using upwards of 46g of N140 and circa 47g of N150 for 155g / 167g bullets.
I use 44.5g of N140 with 155g Scenars and have been to 46g without apparent pressure signs but it lacked accuracy.....46g with Q/load shows major over-pressure at 2.8 OAL but I typically load longer.
My 'pupil' wants to use N150 has a 26" barrel with 1:12 twist and has 155g & 167g Scenars and is considering Bergers (good luck with finding those!)
I told him not to use 168g SMKs as they have a reputation for poor stability past about 800 yds.
Anyone got a 'happy' load using any of the above components that goes reliably to 1000yds?
Interestingly B. Litz puts the 155g Scenar at marginal stability in a 1:12 twist whilst the 167g is fully stable....looks like its down to bearing length being longer for 155g and its near as dammit a VLD. (Secant Ogive)
Cheers

The 155gr .30"cal bullets are far more refined due to (I think) palma rules only allowing bullets below 156gr, thus the 155.5gr bergers.
I've had success with both 155 Amax and scenar (damn you tiff!) over 46gr of n140, but wasn't good when wet, using cci primers I had an sd of 9.
To push them a little harder, there is always the small primered Palma brass that withstands higher pressure.
And don't discount magnum primers, I am having good results using fed 215m in the 260 with n165. (Due to overstocking for the tree tree ate)
To gain a little with the scenars, trimming the meplat and pointing should give good results too, as the newer lots have a pretty large meplat, almost a 'dum dum' as my father would say.
The 155 scenar is longer than the 175 smk.

Dave
Advise him to get a .243 with a 1:8 barrel chambered to run 107 SMK's..will shoot inside a .308 all day long!!

As he has the components; 44.8g N150 preferably in Lapua brass with a 167g Scenar, marked as an accurate load on Vihts website and seems to be excellent in any .308 including my short 20 inch barrel

I took my 25" Howa to Bisley the other week and was getting good results at 1000 with 45gr N140 Berger 155.5s Lapua brass CCI primers. 2830fps. HPS target load is 45gr TR140 and 155 Sierra so this seems like a fairly all round load but build up

I have loads for vit150 for both 155 A-Max and 150 SSTs that shoot to the same point of impact to within 1 MOA out to 1000yds. Will have to check my load data later though.
